The University of Florida installed Lucid Load power conditioning technology on the 480V side of one of its chilled water plants. The facility had been experiencing repeated lightning-related problems affecting its controls and variable frequency drives (VFDs).
Following the installation, the university reported no further issues with its VFDs or control systems caused by lightning strikes. Testing also showed a measurable reduction in electrical consumption, with approximately 4.82% savings during winter operation and 3.45% savings during summer operation.
“Since we have installed this device, we haven’t had any issues with the VFDs or control systemsdue to lightning strikes.

While not a power factor correction capacitor, the university reported that it was the only device it tested that both improved power factor and demonstrate a reduction in kWh. The measured savings were sufficient to justify an estimated five-year payback.
